Christmas in Asia

Hong Kong

Every year I try to go somewhere to experience Christmas. During the lifetime of this blog I been to New York, the year before Tallinn and London and this years December trip was to Hong Kong and Paris which I will tell you about later. I been to HKG loads of times but not for Christmas. I was there to celebrate New Years a couple of years ago but at that point all Xmas decorations were gone. Since a big part of Asias countries are Buddhist countries my expectations of seeing Santa’s in HKG were limited. But I was wrong. Since HKG is a former British colony the western tradition of celebrating christmas is widely spread.

Street decorations

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is always a city that sparkles. Christmas or not. The neon lights and all the sky scrapers are lighting up the city very well but in December the streets were extensively decorated with nice lights.

Hong Kong had even dedicated a whole neighborhood to transform into a christmas village. At this street, Lee Tung Avenue in Wan Chai, Hong Kong island you could even get real – fake – snow in your hair from above. The creators had done an amazing job and the only thing missing was some Swedish glögg.

Mr and Mrs Santa welcomed everyone to the street and also a more traditional European Santa was showing up there from time to time to get the children wish lists.

Inside shopping malls

Hong Kong

Like Singapore Hong Kong is filled with shopping malls. Of course they are all decorated nicely. The more the better is the melody.

Inside the Pacific place shopping mall you could do your arts and crafts. Not only for creative kids though.

Christmas trees

Last but not least, the city is filled with christmas trees. One more beautiful than the other. Here comes a selection of them. I could have filled up my camera with more.

Would I recommend spending christmas in Hong Kong?

Absolutley. If you are not craving for snow but a city trip combined with hiking this is a great place. A fusion of Asia, Europe and America. I haven’t been to Hong Kong on the holidays themselves so I cannot tell about that but for sure it is together with Singapore the place to be in Asia if you would like to have a European touch at your christmas while abroad. Anyone else who spent christmas in Hong Kong? do you know about any local christmas traditions from HKG? tell me, tell me.
