Luncheon with Huawei

A few days ago Huawei technology invited a bunch of travel bloggers to a release lunch for their new phone Huawei mate 20 pro. I am and have been since I bought my first smartphone in 2009 been an iPhone lover. But new technology when it comes to smartphones has always been of interest to me so there was no doubt when I got the invite to attend or not. So on Tuesday this week I went to the event at Hotel Diplomat in Stockholm to get an introduction to the phone and of course we also got to try it out.

Learning lunch

The Swedish marketing manager from Huawei held a presentation where facts about the phone was presented before we got to try it ourselves and could ask questions to a team of Huawei experts.

The camera

For me the most important thing with a phone except I can use internet is the camera. The camera in the phone is the only one I use since it is more convenient while doing activities or travel. The camera in the Huawei phone had loads of new functions that immediately woke my interest to try it out in depth. First of all, with a special case you can use it under water, I mean who doesn’t wanna take selfies with scary fishes while snorkeling? Or making videos where you are shown in colors and the background in black/white. And capture more into less with the wide angle picture? Really great functions to spice up your insta feed and photo album with. Here below I have summed up some functions at the Huawei mate 20 pro phone that it made the phone stand out to me compared to the iPhone I have today during the learning lunch.

AI technology

Todays next generation of smartphones are even smarter than the smart phones. This one was equipped with AI technology. I never heard of a phone that had machine intelligence built in before. For example you could use this phone to identify different objects. For example if you travel and go to Paris and have no clue what picture is hanging at the wall in an art gallery, just identify it with your camera’s AI function and you get to know the answer. The same thing with buildings and food. The question is not if, it is when the smart phones will be smarter than humans. Both fascinating and scary to me how fast the technology changes the world. 20 years ago facts like this was something you looked up in one of the 28 encyclopedia books at home.

Picture taking

Of course it was also possible to take normal pictures and edit them while in the phone. A funny function related to the technology in this phone was that you could once you pictured the item, click on a shopping cart and then you got a list of stores nearby that were selling the product. Of course, it didn’t worked perfectly since there was no stores in the nearby area loaded to the database. But that you can use the phone in that way is pretty amazing. I did though thought that the pictures does though turn out to be a bit to clear and tend to look better than reality. Maybe that is a question about settings, I don’t know. I don’t have enough knowledge to judge.

Picture taking in the dark

One thing that I don’t like with the iPhone that I currently use is that it cannot capture any good pictures in the dark. This was possible with this Huawei mate 20 pro. Just imagine how great it would be if you are going to Hong Kong or Singapore and take pictures of the skyscrapers in the dark and they show up as in the reality when you look back at your travel photos.

Identifying things

I mentioned it above that you could identify items but you can also use the camera to identify foods and find out how many calories they contain. It does not work perfectly but gives you a hint. Like other functions, some people may hate it while calorie counters may love it since it simplifies their life.

Overall impression of Huawei Mate 20 Pro

I really liked the phone. It is larger than a normal iPhone which is a minus so you cannot really run or do skiing with it. In general it feels more like a hand computer than a phone due to the many advanced functions. I thought it would take a while until you got used to not have a “home” button but after an hour with the phone I got used to it.

Currently I have a Samsung phone aswell (work phone) and compared to re-learning from iPhone to Huawei it felt much easier to handle the Huawei phone instead of the Samsung one that I am still not a friend with after seven years.

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro had a lot of innovative features like I mentioned above but it m also had other very interesting functions like you could share power with friends, using it outside in up to -35 degrees and swim with it for 30 minutes in a depth up to 1,5 meter without coverage. In general it was pretty obvious that the phone primarily was developed for the Asian market with all the feature it had but as much as I love cool Asian things like the Unicorn cafe in Bangkok I love cool technological features. It was really an interesting lunch and it would be exciting to try out the Huawei Mate 20 phone a longer time. To change smartphone brand feels like changing bank or moving – it’s nothing you just do from one day to another. Have you ever tried a Huawei phone?
