Airline review Eva Airlines

Now you might wonder why I have been so curious to try out Eva Airlines with origin in Taiwan for so many years and I will tell you the story. In 2007 when I was an exchange student in Singapore I got to know so much about airlines in the region. In all courses I took there were business cases comparing low cost airlines, high end airlines, you had to do cases with airlines in Asia comparing to the Singaporean pride of Singapore airlines. We analyzed routes, service concepts, fares, business models and so on using established theoretical models. Since then I though Eva airlines seemed like an interesting airline to fly. I been to Taiwan two times before but then I been flying with other operators. But now. Finally I got to try out the “Hello Kitty” airline and national carrier of Taiwan.

Check in and lounges

I was flying from Tokyo to Taipei and Taipei to Jakarta. Both flights I checked in at the airport since I was to lazy to scan and fill in all information myself. The first flight was all booked out in business class so I got a seat at the first row. Not my favorite but it was fine.

At Narita I passed by the ANA lounge for a drink and some snacks. It was huge and not great.

At Taipei airport I was starving after running the marathon the day before so I had one thing in mind after checking in. Lounge. since TPE is the hub of Eva Airlines there were plenty of different lounges to choose between. I took the standard one. It was very busy but food was great and I got a nice place to sit where I could charge my phone. Unfortunately there was no fast track at TPE airport.

Business class experience

The almost four hour flight between Narita and Taipei was operated by an A330 with very cute livery characteristic for Eva Airlines.

The seats were of an older model but was comfy. And the blankets. Best ones ever I got. Felt like a teddy bear. You could pre select meals amount five different kinds but I was not doing it so I picked the Japanese food on the plane. Quality was very good and also the wine. I tried also one drink and had a Baileys. I also got a pre departure champagne. It was the official champagne day I wanted to celebrate.

Comfort of the flight got 5 out of 5. Food 5 out of 5. Entertainment I only gave 2. Many old movies and not all of them were in English. Crew was 5.

The second flight from Taipei to Jakarta was a five hour flight. I got a window seat this time. Lucky me. This was also a A330 but with refurbished cabin. Great seats but not my absolute favorite. Since I just had breakfast I was happy when food was served on demand so I wished for my lunch 1,5 hours before landing. I spent the flight watching two movies and playing some video games. And drinking milk tea.

When the food came in I was positively surprised again. I had ordered chicken in coconut sauce and rice. Yum.

Also this flight crew was 5 star. Before my favorite business class has been Turkish and SAS (depending on crew) but I think Eva is a new number two. I will definitely book it again if it is possible. Even take a small extra stop would be worth it.
