Weekend in Salzburg

While living in the center of Europe there are endless of places to explore in the nearby area. In late May I took the train to Salzburg for a weekend with me, myself and I where I explored the city, relaxed and went for a half marathon. The half marathon was what brought me to the hometown of Mozart initially and it was all over a fantastic trip. Except the delayed train on the way back home.

Sightseeing

Not often I buy the city cards when going places but here I did. It was very good value for the money and I was busy to run around between the various activities. First on my list was the famous castle Hellbrunn. The courtyards and the garden was very beautiful and I also got to see a fun trick fountain park where various fountains tricked you and splashed water. Perfectly fun! There was also some great view points facing towards the mountains that I checked out.

Now I am not that into movies but Sound of Music was partially filmed at this castle.

To keep going for my half marathon warmup I headed to the famous mountain Untersberg where I went up with the cable car. I had no plan of hiking but couldn’t resist (not the first time I warm up for running races in less optimal ways). So ended up with a three hour hike and eating classical Austrian food for lunch. Sorry to say but I stick with my traditional food.

Saving on my steps is not my specialty. but I tried hard. After the mountain tour I checked out the Salzburg castle and old town. At this point I just wanted to sit down but the inner explorer wanted to see more.

I even visited a Christmas museum which was on my todo list but it was unexpected small. When I was in museum mode I also took my time to pass by the Mozart museum and birth place. Not that I am a Mozart fan but got a bit inspired so listened to his music on Spotify afterwards. One song was enough though. Then cake and cava time. Salzburg has loads of coffee places so it was hard to pick one.

On Sunday morning in heath and sun I conquered Salzburg half marathon. I was so happy I did not went for the marathon. Damn, it was tough. The race report can be found HERE.

Continued my cultural journey and headed off to the DomQuartier. It was cold inside so perfect after the hot run. I like to visit old buildings and this was a very nice one.

To end my Salzburg trip after also watching a bit of the marathon I went for a river cruise. That was relaxing. Nothing I would pay extra for but it was included in the Salzburg card and one hour at the river was exactly what my tired legs needed after two days of intense activity. At this point I looked a lot forward to take the train back to Zurich. It ended up being delayed for hours so I got home later than I want to remember.

Salzburg. Defiantly a place worth seeing. Probably also during Christmas time. Anyone who has been?
